  1. James Cameron intends to film footage seven miles underwater in the Challenger Deep, the Mariana Trench’s deepest point and the world’s deepest location.
  2. The Avatar sequels were such a massive undertaking for James Cameron that he divided the four scripts among the writing team of Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. Cameron goes into greater detail about the story’s development: “I believe we met for seven months and whiteboarded every scene in every film together, and I didn’t assign each writer to a film until the very last day. I knew if I gave them their scripts ahead of time, they’d tune out whenever we brought up the other movie.”
  3. “The 3D shows you a window into reality; the higher frame rate takes the glass out of the window,” James Cameron said of the Avatar sequels being shot at a higher frame rate. The industry standard is 24 frames per second, with higher frame rates of at least 48 or 60 frames per second. He later decided against it, stating in an interview that, as revolutionary as the format is for cinema, moviegoers have always been used to a specific way of viewing films, and changing that in any way would simply take the audience out of that experience.
  4. James Cameron and Jon Landau confirm that Sony specifically listened to Cameron’s request to build a new camera called the “Venice” Camera and that Cameron will shoot Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 (2024) with this Venice Camera.
  5. When the film finally comes out in 2022, there will have been a 13-year gap between the first and second films. As it was announced almost immediately after the success of the first film, it had one of the longest development times.
  6. Kate Winslet will perform all of her underwater stunts herself, according to James Cameron.
  7. Until his death in June 2015, James Horner had agreed to score the film. Simon Franglen is the new composer.
  8. Edward Norton turned down a role after learning he’d be playing a human, preferring to play a Na’vi. Norton was eventually cast as Nova in Alita: Battle Angel by James Cameron, who still wanted to work with him (2019).
  9. Pandora, a themed area in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park in Orlando, Florida, opened on May 27, 2017. It is based on James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) and features floating mountains, alien wildlife, and bioluminescent plants from Pandora. It has two major attractions, Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey, as well as retail and dining establishments.
  10. The release date has been delayed until 2022. According to James Cameron, this is due to the fact that all upcoming sequels will be shot ‘back to back,’ similar to Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy.

Along with underwater filming, Cameron and the Wt FX special effects team created a motion-capture underwater system to capture the performances.
The equipment was never used before for this film, and it took a year and a half to develop.
And, as with the first film, Cameron intends to push the boundaries of 3D to present “the most immersive 3D available,” he said via video message at the 2022 CinemaCon.
“With 3D with high dynamic range, high frame rate, higher resolution, and a much greater reality in our visual effects,” he said.
